Is acute mumps contagious in children?

Is acute mumps contagious in children?

Acute mumps is contagious, especially in the early stages of the disease. For children suspected of having acute mumps, early medical diagnosis is an important step in protecting the health of themselves and others.

This is a disease caused by a viral infection, the most common pathogen being the mumps virus. The virus is usually spread through respiratory droplets, such as coughing, sneezing, or direct contact with the patient's saliva. The first 1 to 2 days of the disease and within 3 to 5 days after the onset of the disease are the most contagious stages. However, people who have close contact with patients, such as family members or classmates, are at a relatively higher risk of infection.

Typical symptoms of mumps include swelling and pain of the parotid glands, usually presenting as swelling on one or both sides of the face. Fever, headache, fatigue, and loss of appetite may occur. Although mumps is mostly a self-limited disease that will get better on its own, in some cases it may cause complications such as meningitis, orchitis, or ovarian infection, especially for unvaccinated children.

To reduce the risk of transmission, it is recommended that sick children stay at home and avoid crowded places. Family members should wash their hands frequently and avoid sharing dishes and towels. If there are family members who have not been vaccinated against mumps or have low immunity, they should be especially careful. When symptoms first appear, children should be taken to the doctor in time to clarify the cause and receive necessary care and medical advice.
