How to measure neonatal jaundice

How to measure neonatal jaundice

How is neonatal jaundice measured?

The detection methods for neonatal jaundice include routine blood tests, serum bilirubin concentration tests, liver function tests, etc.

1. Routine blood test: It is a routine examination item. By observing the number and proportion of red blood cells, hemoglobin and nucleated red blood cells, it can help diagnose neonatal hemolytic jaundice.

2. Serum bilirubin concentration test: It is a laboratory test item of venous blood or micro-blood sampling, focusing on observing serum bilirubin concentration. When the index exceeds 2mg//dl, jaundice can be diagnosed. If the serum bilirubin increases by more than 5mg/g/dl per day, or >0.5mg/dl per hour, it may be pathological jaundice.

3. Liver function test: When pathological jaundice is suspected, liver function test should be performed. By observing serum total bilirubin, combined with bilirubin, serum transaminase and other indicators, it is helpful to judge whether liver function is in a normal state, which is helpful for the diagnosis of liver disease.

Blood type examination, red blood cell fragility examination, imaging examination, etc. are also needed to help determine whether it is physiological or pathological jaundice, and formulate an appropriate treatment plan based on the actual situation. During the treatment of the disease, parents should strengthen the daily care of the newborn, change diapers in time, breastfeed properly, and keep the indoor temperature constant.
