What medicine should children take for upper respiratory tract infection and cough

When children have symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection and cough, they should take medication under the guidance of a doctor and also pay attention to replenishing water, getting adequate rest, etc. If the symptoms are severe or persist, it is recommended to seek medical attention in time for a routine blood test to determine whether there is a secondary bacterial infection.

1. Oral medication

1. Antihistamines: such as chlorpheniramine maleate tablets, can calm and relieve cough, and can effectively relieve symptoms such as cough caused by upper respiratory tract infections caused by allergies.

2. Expectorant and antiasthmatic drugs: If the patient has obvious sputum symptoms, he or she needs to follow the doctor's advice to use expectorant drugs such as ambroxol hydrochloride syrup to dilute the sputum and promote expectoration, thereby alleviating cough symptoms. In addition, for children with bronchospasm, salbutamol sulfate inhalation aerosol can also be used to relax bronchial smooth muscles and improve ventilation.

3. Antibiotics: When the patient coughs up yellow purulent sputum and the body temperature exceeds 38.5℃, a complete blood test is required. If the white blood cell and C-reactive protein are significantly increased and accompanied by positive chlamydia antibodies, it is considered to be caused by mycoplasma infection. In this case, macrolide antibiotics such as azithromycin dry suspension can be used under the guidance of professional doctors to control the infection.

4. Chinese patent medicine: In addition to the above-mentioned medicines, other Chinese patent medicines with the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying can be selected according to the situation, such as pediatric Xiaoji Zhike oral liquid, Chuanbei loquat paste, compound fresh bamboo juice, etc.

2. Intravenous Infusion of Drugs

If the child's condition is more serious, it is necessary to give medication through intravenous drip under the guidance of a doctor, and common drugs include ceftriaxone sodium for injection, penicillin sodium for injection, and amoxicillin sodium and clavulanate potassium for injection. Among them, ceftriaxone sodium for injection is suitable for older children, while penicillin sodium for injection and amoxicillin sodium and clavulanate potassium for injection are mainly for infants and young children.

3. Nebulization Inhalation

Some children may have severe throat edema, so medication alone is not effective. In this case, nebulization inhalation can also be used for treatment. Hormone drugs such as budesonide suspension are often used in combination with bronchodilator drugs such as ipratropium bromide aerosol for nebulization inhalation to quickly eliminate throat edema and help relieve respiratory obstruction problems.
