Causes of patent ductus arteriosus in neonates on echocardiography

Patent ductus arteriosus in newborns is a common cardiovascular problem and if it is serious, medical evaluation and intervention are required as soon as possible.

The ductus arteriosus is an important vascular channel connecting the aorta and the pulmonary artery during the fetal period, and usually closes on its own after birth. If the closure fails, it may be related to factors such as premature birth, low birth weight or perinatal infection. The lack of stimulation of the oxygen environment or abnormal prostaglandin levels can also cause the ductus to remain open.

In most cases, patent ductus arteriosus will increase the burden on the heart, causing problems such as feeding difficulties, shortness of breath or growth retardation, and in severe cases may cause heart failure or pulmonary hypertension. Some early symptoms may be mild, but doctors need to diagnose through cardiac ultrasound to determine the size of the opening and blood flow.

Parents need to take their children for regular health checks, especially for premature babies or newborns with a family history of related diseases. If diagnosed, medication or surgery can be used under the guidance of a doctor to avoid serious complications. Parents should also pay attention to their children's daily care, improve their immunity and nutrition levels, and enhance their physical recovery ability.
