What kind of exercise should children with ADHD do?

The main symptoms of ADHD in mentally retarded children are: excessive activity, lack of concentration, accompanied by learning difficulties and behavioral disorders. Mentally retarded children with ADHD cannot organize and analyze the information obtained by their sense organs such as vision, hearing, touch, smell, taste, and balance, resulting in the phenomenon that the whole body cannot work in a coordinated manner, that is, sensory comprehensive disorder. This phenomenon is very common in mentally retarded children. Sensory comprehensive disorder is divided into: body movement disorder, spatial perception disorder, vestibular balance disorder, auditory language disorder and tactile defense disorder.

For the treatment of ADHD in mentally retarded children, the common method is to let them take central nervous system stimulants, which makes them quieter and less active, but the actual effect is not ideal. Taking such drugs has side effects on mentally retarded children and even aggravates the mental retardation of mentally retarded children. In the case that there is no ideal specific drug for treatment, I use exercise therapy, that is, sensory comprehensive training, to correct it in physical rehabilitation training. Exercise therapy does not directly train the learning and cognitive skills of mentally retarded children, but is based on the understanding that learning disabilities are caused by poor coordination of brain organization, and proposes to strengthen the training of sensory organs. In particular, the training of vestibular balance and touch enables mentally retarded children to integrate these senses and make adaptive responses. Before implementing the training, I first find out the intellectual development level and sensory comprehensive disorder of the mentally retarded children, and then formulate a feasible training plan according to the specific situation.

The sensory comprehensive training method is similar to games, but not the same as games. Schools with conditions can introduce sensory comprehensive training equipment and technology, and set up special training equipment to enhance attention, memory, and imagination for the problem of poor learning ability of mentally retarded children, such as instantaneous memory, spatial perception, digital reasoning, maze test, etc. Let mentally retarded children control their body senses in a relaxed and happy atmosphere, and improve their vision, hearing, balance and motor coordination abilities.

The methods I often use in teaching and training are:

1. Skateboarding game A skateboard made of a wooden board and four wheels can rotate freely in any direction. The mentally retarded child lies prone on the skateboard and uses his body to resist the resistance when the skateboard slides across the floor or slides toward the slope. The sensory stimulation and motor response promoted by skateboarding are not achievable when the mentally retarded child sits or stands. After skateboarding, the mentally retarded child usually feels focused.

2. Standing, crawling, and walking on a balance beam Under the protection of the teacher, let the mentally retarded children stand on the balance beam, crawl forward, walk back and forth, and repeat several times.

3. Rotation of the wooden horse: The mentally retarded child sits on the wooden horse, and the teacher rotates the wooden horse, rotating it six times clockwise and six times counterclockwise, and repeats this process several times.

4. When climbing stairs, let the mentally retarded child jog up the stairs (three floors are preferred), then walk down, and repeat this many times.

5. Rolling the barrel: Prepare a big barrel and let the mentally retarded child crawl inside the barrel. The teacher slowly rolls the barrel forward, and the mentally retarded child keeps crawling to maintain his or her body balance.

6. Trampoline: Let the mentally retarded children jump on the trampoline for about 20 minutes.

7. Kangaroo jump: Let the mentally retarded child stand in a cloth bag and half-squat, put his feet together, and jump forward step by step like a kangaroo, and repeat many times.

8. Tire Rolling: Let mentally retarded children roll tires on a 1-meter-wide track, and control the tires so that they do not roll out of the track.

The above exercises can be performed in rotation, or several of them can be selected according to the physical condition of the mentally retarded children and training conditions. During training, teachers should prevent mentally retarded children from developing fear and boredom, and let students maintain a happy mood from beginning to end, so as to achieve good training results.
