How long does it take to treat hemolytic jaundice in newborn babies?

The treatment time for hemolytic jaundice in newborns is usually 1-2 weeks, depending on the severity of the condition and the treatment method. Hemolytic jaundice is caused by the destruction of red blood cells and increased bilirubin levels due to incompatibility of the blood types of mother and baby. Treatment mainly includes phototherapy, drug therapy and exchange transfusion therapy.

1. Phototherapy is the preferred method for treating neonatal hemolytic jaundice. Through blue light irradiation, bilirubin is converted into water-soluble substances, which are easy to excrete from the body. Phototherapy usually lasts for 24-48 hours, and severe cases may take longer. During phototherapy, care should be taken to protect the baby's eyes and genitals to avoid side effects.

2. Drug treatment can assist phototherapy and accelerate bilirubin metabolism. Commonly used drugs include phenobarbital and Yinzhihuang injection. Phenobarbital can induce liver enzyme activity and promote bilirubin metabolism; Yinzhihuang injection has the effects of clearing away heat and detoxifying, promoting bile secretion and relieving jaundice. Drug treatment should be carried out under the guidance of a doctor to avoid adverse reactions.

3. For severe cases, exchange transfusion may be required. Exchange transfusion can quickly reduce bilirubin levels and prevent the occurrence of kernicterus. Exchange transfusion has high risks and needs to be performed in professional medical institutions. After surgery, the baby's vital signs need to be closely monitored to prevent complications.

During treatment, parents need to closely monitor the baby's condition and regularly check the bilirubin level. Keep the baby's water intake adequate to promote bilirubin excretion. Pay attention to changes in the baby's skin and sclera. If the jaundice worsens or symptoms such as drowsiness and refusal to feed occur, seek medical attention in a timely manner.

Although neonatal hemolytic jaundice is common, timely treatment has a good prognosis. Parents do not need to worry too much, but they need to actively cooperate with doctors for treatment and follow up regularly. With scientific treatment and careful care, most babies can recover within 1-2 weeks. If jaundice lasts too long or recurs, further examination is needed to rule out other possible diseases.
