What are the commonly used drugs for mumps?

Once we have symptoms of mumps, it will cause serious harm to our health and affect our daily life. Therefore, mumps should be actively treated after it occurs. We should learn more about the treatment measures of this disease. Next, I will introduce to you the treatment methods of this disease.

Acetaminophen: Also known as paracetamol, it is a commonly used over-the-counter antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug. It produces antipyretic and analgesic effects by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins. It is suitable for relieving acute attacks of mild and moderate parotitis. Its compound preparation Sanlitong is also a drug frequently used by mumps patients. Its main ingredients are acetaminophen, isopropyl antipyrine and caffeine. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. When used in combination with acetaminophen, it can enhance the analgesic effect and is suitable for the treatment of acute attacks of mumps.

Ibuprofen: Like acetaminophen, it is an over-the-counter antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug. It produces analgesic effects by inhibiting cyclooxygenase and reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins. Its effects are stronger than acetaminophen and it is suitable for relieving acute attacks of mumps. Both regular preparations and sustained-release preparations of this drug can be used. Sustained-release preparations such as ibuprofen have a longer-lasting effect and are more convenient to take once every 12 hours.

Pizothiazide: It has strong antihistamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine and weak anti-acetylcholine effects, and can inhibit the pain-inducing effect of bradykinin on nerve endings. It is suitable for the prevention and treatment of mumps and can alleviate symptoms and the number of attacks, but it has no immediate relief effect on acute attacks of mumps. The usual dosage is 0.5-1 mg (1-2 tablets) each time, 1-3 times a day.

Ergotamine Caffeine: Each tablet of this preparation contains 1 mg of ergotamine tartrate and 100 mg of caffeine. The ergotamine mainly acts directly on the contraction of smooth muscle and is related to the stimulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine receptors, which restores the excessive dilation and pulsation of cerebral arteries to normal, thereby alleviating mumps. Caffeine can enhance the efficacy of ergotamine and reduce side effects.

Sumatriptan: It is a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor agonist with the effect of constricting the carotid artery. It is suitable for the treatment of acute mumps. The initial oral dose is 100 mg, 2 to 3 times a day. Generally, symptoms can be relieved about 30 minutes after oral administration. If the first dose is ineffective, the second dose will not be given.

The above is an introduction to the drugs that can treat mumps. The emergence of mumps has harmed the health of many people and brought more inconvenience to their lives. I hope everyone can have a thorough understanding of mumps. After the disease occurs, it is necessary to actively treat it and pay attention to relevant prevention of mumps in daily life.
