Adverse consequences of pneumonia in children

I believe we all know that neonatal lung is the most common infectious disease in the neonatal period, with high morbidity and mortality. It is characterized by diffuse lung lesions and atypical clinical manifestations. It needs to be diagnosed early and treated correctly. Let us take a closer look at the main hazards of this disease.

1. Systemic infection

It is prone to cause systemic infections such as sepsis, purulent meningitis, ventricular meningitis and septic shock.

2. Pulmonary complications

When the child suddenly develops shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and the cyanosis becomes significantly worse, complications such as empyema, pyopneumothorax, bullae, or mediastinal emphysema may occur.

3. Heart failure

If the child is restless, has a rapid heart rate, rapid breathing, and a liver that significantly enlarges in a short period of time, it indicates that he or she has concurrent heart failure.

Most neonatal pneumonia is caused by infection after birth, called late-onset pneumonia, which is mainly transmitted to the newborn through droplets after a family member who has close contact with the newborn catches a cold or respiratory infection. A few are infected in the womb or during delivery. If not treated in time, it can cause respiratory distress or even suffocation. In severe cases, it can cause brain damage due to lack of oxygen, leaving permanent sequelae (such as epilepsy). Once confirmed, the doctor will use antibiotics or antiviral drugs according to the actual situation of the child, and provide timely auxiliary oxygen therapy and airway treatment to correct hypoxia and electrolyte disorders and avoid other complications.
