"June 1st" pays attention to children's hernia

Childhood hernia is one of the most common congenital diseases in newborns. The cause of the disease is incomplete closure of the processus vaginalis, which causes congenital defects in the internal ring opening in the inguinal area, leading to herniation of visceral organs in the abdominal cavity. The clinical manifestations are reducible masses in the inguinal area, especially when the child cries, defecates, etc. The mass will increase significantly. The mass will be reduced or disappear after lying down or falling asleep. Ultrasound examination can easily determine the diagnosis. The disease can be seen in both boys and girls. Repeated herniation of organs will affect the child's digestive system, causing indigestion, abdominal distension and abdominal pain in children, etc. Boys can also affect testicular development.

For children with hernia before the age of 1, a small number of children with milder symptoms may be able to heal on their own, but children with severe symptoms or hernias that have not healed on their own after the age of 1 need surgical treatment. Children under the age of 6 are all treated with high ligation of the hernia sac. There are two methods: open surgery and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Our department currently uses minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, which has less damage, faster recovery, lower recurrence, and less spermatic cord disturbance. For children over 6 years old who have developed earlier, it is recommended to consider using a biological patch repair, because the recurrence rate of high ligation surgery will increase with the age of the child.
