How to detect jaundice in newborns

How to detect neonatal jaundice?

Nowadays, many babies are prone to jaundice. There are many medical methods to treat jaundice. Common testing methods include liver function test, bilirubin test, red blood cell test and red blood cell fragility test. Among them, red blood cell test and red blood cell fragility test can also accurately determine whether the child's body has hemolysis.

1. Bilirubin test

Bilirubin testing is one of the important indicators for diagnosing neonatal jaundice. It is mainly determined by venous blood sampling or micro-blood sampling to determine the concentration of infant serum bilirubin. Generally speaking, pathological jaundice leads to higher serum bilirubin concentration in children. Currently, the commonly used instrument is mainly the transcutaneous bilirubin meter, which is a non-invasive detection method and is very convenient to operate.

2. Liver function test methods

Liver function test methods are also one of the main bases for detecting neonatal jaundice. This week's test method can effectively detect children's total bilirubin and marital bilirubin, as well as transaminase and alkaline phosphatase.

3. Red blood cell examination

When judging whether a newborn has jaundice, a routine red blood cell examination must be performed, which can also help screen whether the child has hemolytic disease. Because generally speaking, the onset of hemolytic disease can easily lead to a decrease in the child's hemoglobin and red blood cell count.

4. Red blood cell fragility test

If it is suspected that neonatal jaundice is caused by hemolysis, the red blood cell fragility test can be used to check whether there is hemolysis. At the same time, the final test results can also show whether the child has other diseases such as autoimmune hemolysis and polycythemia vera. If the fragility continues to decrease, it means that the child has thalassemia and other hemoglobin diseases.
