Can Kaihoujian be used for nighttime emergency treatment of acute laryngitis in children?

It is not recommended to use a throat sword for nighttime emergency treatment of acute laryngitis in children. You need to seek medical attention in time and take measures such as nebulization inhalation, hormone treatment and antibiotic treatment. Acute laryngitis is mostly caused by viral infection, which manifests as hoarseness, barking cough and difficulty breathing, and in severe cases can lead to suffocation.

1. The main cause of acute laryngitis is viral infection, such as parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, etc., and in a few cases, it is caused by bacterial infection. Viral infection causes congestion and edema of the laryngeal mucosa, airway stenosis, and symptoms worsen especially at night, which may be related to changes in body position and vagus nerve excitement.

2. Kaihoujian is a Chinese patent medicine, the main ingredients of which include menthol and borneol, which has cooling and analgesic effects, but its therapeutic effect on acute laryngitis is limited, and it may irritate the laryngeal mucosa and aggravate the symptoms. The treatment of acute laryngitis should focus on relieving laryngeal edema and maintaining airway patency.

3. Nebulizer inhalation is the first choice for the treatment of acute laryngitis. Commonly used drugs include budesonide and epinephrine. Budesonide is a glucocorticoid that can quickly reduce laryngeal edema; epinephrine has the effect of constricting blood vessels and reducing edema, but it must be used under the guidance of a doctor.

4. Hormone therapy is an important measure for acute laryngitis. Oral or intravenous dexamethasone can effectively relieve laryngeal edema and improve breathing difficulties. Children with more severe symptoms need to seek medical attention in a timely manner, and if necessary, perform endotracheal intubation or tracheotomy to keep the airway open.

5. Antibiotic treatment is suitable for acute laryngitis caused by bacterial infection. Commonly used drugs include penicillins, cephalosporins, etc. However, acute laryngitis caused by viral infection does not require antibiotics, and the abuse of antibiotics may lead to increased drug resistance.

6. During home care, parents should keep the child quiet and avoid crying to aggravate throat edema; keep the indoor air moist and use a humidifier; encourage the child to drink more water and avoid irritating food. If the child has severe breathing difficulties, cyanosis and other symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Acute laryngitis in children is an emergency. Parents need to be vigilant and take correct treatment measures in time to avoid delaying the disease. It is not recommended to use a throat sword for first aid at night. Nebulizer inhalation, hormone treatment and antibiotic treatment should be the main treatment. If necessary, seek medical treatment in time to ensure the safety of the child.
