Are there any sequelae of polio?

Polio is a complex disease, an acute infectious disease caused by the polio virus. It is also a serious disabling disease. The main lesions are in the gray matter of the spinal cord. Severe damage may also cause sequelae such as paralysis. Because the incidence rate in children is higher than that in adults, it is called polio. Let’s talk about whether polio has any sequelae.

The result of polio is often lifelong limb disability in children, and the disability caused by polio sequelae is mainly manifested in muscle paralysis and limb paralysis.

First, it can cause contracture and flexion of the hip joint or looseness and instability, and even cause hip dislocation, knee flexion deformity, inward or outward bending of the calf, etc.

Secondly, it will also manifest itself in limb muscle atrophy and weakness, limb deformity, difficulty in upper and lower limb movement, joint instability, and unequal length of bilateral limbs.

Thirdly, the symptoms of polio sequelae also manifest in the feet, and various deformities of the feet may occur. For example, the heels or toes cannot touch the ground when walking, or the feet may be inverted and walk on the outside of the instep.

Fourthly, not only will there be sequelae in the feet, but deformities may also occur in other parts of the body, such as deformities of the upper limbs, curvature of the spine, tilt of the pelvis, etc.

Through the above list of polio sequelae, I believe everyone has a certain understanding. However, for this disease, we must not only actively understand its cause, but also take effective prevention as early as possible according to the cause. Start taking polio vaccine in winter and spring 2 months after the baby is born, maintain good environmental hygiene and food hygiene on weekdays, develop good living habits of washing hands before meals and after defecation, and not eating unclean food. Clothes and bedding should be disinfected in time, flies and other sources of infection should be cut off, rest and nutrition should be arranged reasonably, and children's resistance to disease should be enhanced. It is most important to eliminate the source of disease from the root.
