What medicine is used to treat jaundice?

What medicine is used to treat jaundice? Jaundice caused by excessive bilirubin production in newborns, immature liver function and enterohepatic circulation leads to increased bilirubin concentration, which is clinically called physiological jaundice. So what medicine is used to treat jaundice? Let's see what the experts say.

Jaundice is a yellowing of the skin, sclera and mucous membranes that can be observed with the naked eye. It is caused by the accumulation of a yellow substance called bilirubin in the blood. East Asians are particularly prone to jaundice, with about half of full-term newborns experiencing jaundice, and in premature babies, this figure is as high as 80%. This is due to certain physiological characteristics of newborns, which easily increase the level of bilirubin in the blood, causing the skin and eyes to turn yellow.

1. Western medicine

(1) Glucose and alkaline solutions: Glucose can provide calories to babies with jaundice, nourish important organs such as the heart, liver, and brain, and reduce metabolic acidosis.

(2) Plasma or albumin: Providing albumin linked to bilirubin can reduce free unconjugated bilirubin and prevent bilirubin encephalopathy.

(3) Enzyme inducers: They can induce the activity of glucuronyl transferase in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum of hepatocytes and reduce serum unconjugated bilirubin.

(4) Adrenal cortex hormone: It can prevent the reaction between antigen and antibody, reduce hemolysis, and promote the binding ability of hepatocyte glucuronyl transferase to bilirubin.

2. Traditional Chinese Medicine

(1) Xiaohuangli Granules: Artemisia capillaris 9g, Gardenia jasminoides 3g, Rhubarb 3g, Imperatae rhizome 10g, Lysimachia chinensis 6g, Poria 6g.

(2) Yinchenhao Decoction: Yinchen 1.5g, Gardenia 9g, processed rhubarb 3g, and liquorice 1.5g.

(3) Sanhuang Decoction: Scutellaria baicalensis 4.5g, Coptis chinensis 1.5g, processed rhubarb 3g.
