How to treat newborn jaundice? Why do babies have jaundice for different lengths of time?

It is normal for newborns to have jaundice, but new mothers will inevitably be anxious when they see their babies with jaundice, and sometimes even blindly use medication. In fact, this approach is wrong. So how to deal with neonatal jaundice?

Babies with jaundice are due to incomplete physiological development.

Neonatal jaundice is mainly related to the characteristics of neonatal bilirubin metabolism: excessive bilirubin production, insufficient transport capacity, imperfect liver function development, and imperfect ability to excrete bilirubin. In other words, the neonatal bilirubin uptake, binding and excretion capacity is weak, which can easily aggravate jaundice when the neonate is hungry, hypoxic, delayed meconium excretion, dehydration and acidosis.

There are different types of jaundice, and mothers should pay attention to different treatments

The baby's jaundice is not getting better day by day, and the mother is really anxious! Is neonatal jaundice the first disease a baby gets after birth? Why do some children have jaundice for a very long time, while others are gone in a few days?

Jaundice is divided into physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice

Physiological jaundice is not a disease, but a special condition in the neonatal period, which has no effect on the child's health. Pathological jaundice is a disease state. If the bilirubin in the blood is particularly high, kernicterus will occur, which will affect the child's intellectual development, muscle tension and motor ability. That is, kernicterus will leave sequelae. Therefore, pathological jaundice should be actively treated.

Don't be afraid of physiological jaundice, but don't ignore pathological jaundice

The recovery time of jaundice is mainly determined by factors such as the degree of jaundice, the progression of the disease, and the presence or absence of underlying diseases.

Physiological jaundice usually appears 2-3 days after birth, reaches its peak on 4-5 days, disappears on 5-7 days, and lasts no later than 2 weeks.

However, pathological jaundice usually appears more than 24 hours after birth, with high jaundice values (greater than 12.9 mg/dl in full-term infants and greater than 15 mg/dl in premature infants), long duration, and the possibility of recurrence. In addition, certain diseases such as neonatal hepatitis, sepsis, neonatal hemolytic disease, biliary atresia and certain genetic metabolic diseases can delay the disappearance of jaundice or aggravate it.

To treat jaundice, mothers should not take medicine without authorization

Giving medicine to a newborn baby is particularly scary for many mothers, and being asked by the doctor to push the baby into the treatment room for blue light treatment makes mothers even more worried. Is blue light treatment for jaundice safe and reliable? Will there be any sequelae of taking medicine?

Taking medicine to treat jaundice is effective, but it must be taken under the guidance of a doctor

Giving medicine to newborn babies to treat jaundice is always opposed by the elderly, who are afraid of sequelae. In fact, it generally has no effect. Drug treatment generally uses some liver enzyme inducers to promote the conversion of bilirubin. It often has some short-term side effects, which can disappear after stopping the drug. It can also be combined with traditional Chinese medicine treatment, such as Yinzhihuang oral liquid, which has a good effect on jaundice. The drug should be used under the guidance of a doctor, and not on your own.
