Three major characteristics of breast milk jaundice

Three major characteristics of breast milk jaundice

Breast milk jaundice refers to jaundice symptoms that occur within 3-5 days after the baby is born. Its characteristics include the following three aspects:

1. Mild jaundice: Breast milk jaundice is usually mild, showing yellow skin and whites of the eyes. Jaundice starts from the head, gradually spreads downward, and finally reaches the whole body. The color of jaundice is usually yellow-green or orange-yellow, which is related to the amount of bilirubin deposited. Different babies may have different degrees of jaundice, but usually no more than 12mg/dl.

2. Longer duration: Breast milk jaundice usually lasts longer than other types of jaundice. It usually lasts 1-2 weeks and gradually subsides within 2-3 weeks. This is because some substances in breast milk affect the metabolism and excretion of bilirubin, resulting in a longer duration of jaundice.

3. The baby is in good health: Breast milk jaundice is usually a benign disease, and the baby's health is usually good. They usually have no other obvious symptoms, such as loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. Their weight gain is normal, and they have enough diapers and bowel movements.

Characteristics of breast milk jaundice include mild jaundice, long duration, and good health of the baby. If the baby has symptoms of jaundice, parents should seek medical attention in time to determine the cause of jaundice and take appropriate treatment measures.
