Is high exchange transfusion dangerous for neonatal jaundice?

Neonatal jaundice usually refers to high levels of total bilirubin in the newborn's serum, with signs of jaundice. Blood exchange medicine is called blood exchange therapy. This treatment is dangerous and may cause anemia, secondary infection, thrombosis and other complications. The specific analysis is as follows:

1. Anemia: Affected by factors such as neonatal hemolysis and the body's immune system's resistance to foreign red blood cells, anemia of varying degrees may occur after exchange transfusion therapy, and may even develop into severe anemia, leading to neonatal anemic shock.

2. Secondary infection: Blood exchange therapy is an effective method for treating severe jaundice in early neonates, and it is also a relatively quick treatment method. Due to the poor immune function of neonates, it is a traumatic treatment with the possibility of secondary infection, which is easy to be combined with various bacterial infections and may even induce sepsis.

3. Thrombosis: During the blood transfusion process, concentrated red blood cells may be needed, which may then be affected by the body's coagulation mechanism and lead to thrombosis, inducing different thrombotic diseases such as deep vein thrombosis, stroke, and pulmonary embolism.

In addition to the three common complications mentioned above, it may also cause heart failure, cardiac arrest and multiple organ failure, so this treatment method is only suitable for critically ill newborns. It should be emphasized that although this treatment is dangerous, it is a more effective treatment method. Parents should cooperate with doctors to carry out relevant treatments for newborns to prevent the disease from developing to an uncontrollable level. At the same time, according to the doctor's advice, take the newborn for regular checkups to understand the control of the disease.
