What causes hernia in children?

Pediatric hernia is a common pediatric surgical disease with various causes, including congenital developmental defects and poor acquired living habits.

1. Congenital factors: During embryonic development, the processus vaginalis of the peritoneum fails to completely close, causing the intestines or omentum and other organs to protrude, forming a hernia. Developmental defects in the umbilicus also cause the umbilical ring to not close, making it easy for umbilical hernias to occur in the weak part of the umbilicus. Premature babies are more likely to develop hernias because their bodies are not fully developed and their ability to withstand negative pressure is weak.

2. Acquired factors: Frequent crying, long-term constipation, severe coughing, etc. will increase the intra-abdominal pressure, causing the internal organs in the abdominal cavity to bulge out through the weak part of the abdominal wall, leading to the occurrence of hernia. Bad living habits, such as unreasonable diet and strenuous exercise, may also induce hernia.

To prevent hernia in children, we need to start from reducing the increase of abdominal pressure and improving living habits. Parents should try to avoid children crying loudly and coughing violently, keep bowel movements smooth, and reduce the occurrence of constipation. At the same time, they should eat a reasonable diet and avoid letting children stand or do strenuous exercise too early.

Children who have already developed hernia should seek medical attention in a timely manner and choose appropriate treatment methods according to the doctor's advice. Parents should also pay attention to their children's health status in daily care and deal with any abnormalities in a timely manner to ensure their healthy growth.
