Mumps symptoms and treatment

Mumps symptoms and treatment

Mumps generally refers to epidemic parotitis, which is a respiratory infectious disease caused by the mumps virus. The main symptoms are swollen parotid glands, ulcers at the corners of the mouth, fever and chills, which can be relieved by general treatment, drug treatment, surgical treatment and other methods.

1. Symptoms of mumps

1. Parotid gland swelling: This is a typical symptom of mumps. Parotid gland swelling usually develops forward, backward and downward with the earlobe as the center, and is pear-shaped with unclear edges. The local skin is tense, shiny but not red, tough and elastic to the touch, and painful to touch. Usually one side swells first 2-3 days later, and then the other side also swells, accompanied by pain and heat.

2. Ulcers at the corners of the mouth: Some patients with mumps will experience ulcers at the corners of the mouth. The ulcers vary in size and duration. They are usually intermittent and prone to recurrence.

3. Fever and chills: Mumps patients are often accompanied by fever symptoms, with body temperature reaching above 39°C, and the fever may last for 3-5 days, and most are accompanied by adverse symptoms such as chills.

2. Treatment of mumps

1. General treatment: The patient should rest in bed until the swelling of the parotid gland subsides. At the same time, pay attention to oral hygiene and rinse your mouth with saline after eating. Eat soft and easily digestible food and avoid eating sour, spicy, hard and dry food to avoid aggravating the symptoms of gland swelling and pain.

2. Drug treatment: For mumps caused by bacterial infection, you can use cefixime tablets, amoxicillin capsules and other drugs as prescribed by the doctor. For mumps caused by viral infection, you can use ribavirin tablets, acyclovir tablets and other antiviral drugs.

3. Surgical treatment: For a small number of patients with acute suppurative parotitis and chronic recurrent parotitis, if conservative treatment is ineffective, parotidectomy can be chosen for treatment.

Note: Patients need to be isolated for treatment, and used items also need to be disinfected to prevent cross infection. Medication must also be taken strictly according to the doctor's instructions, and medication cannot be taken privately to avoid adverse effects.
