Neonatal jaundice regresses slowly

Jaundice is a common symptom in newborns, but some babies' bodies will slowly disappear. There are many reasons for this phenomenon. Parents should choose appropriate treatments according to different reasons. The more common causes are mainly congenital hypothyroidism, breast milk jaundice, head hematoma or subcutaneous hematoma.

1. Congenital hypothyroidism

If the baby's body has congenital hypothyroidism, then it may cause their body to function slowly with jaundice. This happens because congenital hypothyroidism causes the liver enzyme activity of bilirubin metabolism to gradually decrease, so bilirubin cannot be excreted from the body well. Severe cases may even cause the baby's body to have special facial features or postures, such as rough skin and facial myxedema.

2. Breast milk jaundice

If a child develops breast milk jaundice, it will also regress slowly. This jaundice usually occurs in exclusively breastfed children. Under normal circumstances, symptoms are often delayed by about 1 to 2 months. Due to the action of glucuronidase in breast milk, the enterohepatic circulation of the human body may gradually increase, so the reabsorption of bilirubin will continue to increase. Because of this, the jaundice in infants and young children will slowly subside.

3. Hematoma

If the baby has a head hematoma or subcutaneous hematoma, it will cause a large number of red blood cells in the body to be destroyed and gradually form bilirubin. The hematoma will subside relatively slowly, so the corresponding jaundice symptoms will subside slowly. At the same time, some larger hematomas generally require surgical incision and drainage to be completely eliminated.
