What are the symptoms of mumps-induced encephalitis?

Mumps is a common viral infection. The mumps virus mainly invades the exocrine organs. If it is a male, it may also cause orchitis. Both men and women may develop severe viral encephalitis. If it is mumps viral encephalitis, there may be severe persistent high fever, confusion, significantly increased intracranial pressure, headache, nausea, vomiting, and even epilepsy. Lumbar puncture cerebrospinal fluid test shows a significant increase in protein count and a small increase in cell count.

How to check for encephalitis

If it is suspected that encephalitis is the cause, a series of tests can be performed to make a judgment. First of all, clinical symptoms should be used to judge. Encephalitis will cause headache, dizziness, fever, nausea and vomiting. Severe cases may also cause drowsiness and impaired consciousness. It can be diagnosed through head CT or MRI examinations, and cerebrospinal fluid puncture and routine and biochemical examinations of cerebrospinal fluid can be used for judgment. Therefore, the diagnosis of encephalitis mainly depends on clinical symptoms, combined with imaging and laboratory tests for comprehensive analysis and judgment. After the specific cause is clarified, timely treatment of the cause can effectively alleviate the clinical symptoms.

How to treat encephalitis in adults

Adults who catch a cold or are tired are prone to viral, bacterial, fungal and other infections that may lead to encephalitis. They need to be hospitalized promptly for treatment. A plain scan and enhanced MRI of the head and a lumbar puncture can be performed to obtain cerebrospinal fluid for testing. If it is caused by a viral infection, antiviral drugs can be used for treatment. If it is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics that can pass through the blood-brain barrier can be used for treatment. Ceftriaxone is more commonly used in clinical practice. If there is a fungal infection, antifungal drugs need to be used for treatment. In addition to the etiological treatment of encephalitis, corresponding drugs should also be used symptomatically.
