How to diagnose hernia in children

The diagnosis of hernia in children is usually based on physical examination, and sometimes auxiliary imaging examinations are needed for further confirmation.

Pediatric hernia refers to the protrusion of tissues or organs in the abdominal cavity through the weak area of ​​the abdominal wall. It is a relatively common disease, which is more common in the groin area. The main cause of hernia is usually related to incomplete development of the abdominal wall or congenital weakness.

During the examination, the doctor usually makes a preliminary judgment through inspection and palpation. For example, the child will be asked to stand, cough or exert force to observe whether the hernia is protruding. During this process, if a soft bulge is seen or felt in the groin or periumbilical area, and the bulge can be gently pushed back by hand, it is highly suspected to be a hernia. If the situation is not clear enough, an inguinal or abdominal ultrasound examination may be required to clearly understand the specific location and nature of the protrusion.

Parents should pay attention to whether their children have bulges in the groin or navel, especially whether these parts change significantly when they exert force, cough or cry. If the child has a stuck or incarcerated hernia, such as pain, crying and being unable to be comforted, and the protruding part cannot be pushed back, the child should be taken to the hospital immediately to avoid delaying the best time for treatment.
