What are the symptoms of Kawasaki disease in children?

The main symptoms of Kawasaki disease in children include fever, rash, congested eyes, chapped lips and swollen lymph nodes. See a doctor as soon as possible to prevent serious cardiovascular complications. Kawasaki disease is a self-limiting disease, but if not treated in time it may lead to long-term cardiovascular problems.

1) Fever: Kawasaki disease in children usually presents as persistent high fever, with body temperature reaching over 39°C and lasting for more than five days. Fever is one of the first symptoms discovered by parents and is also a typical manifestation of Kawasaki disease.

2) Rash and eye symptoms: Children often develop a red rash, especially on the trunk and limbs. The rash is usually accompanied by eye congestion, i.e. conjunctivitis. The whites of the eyes will be bloodshot, but there will be no purulent secretions.

3) Changes in the lips and oral cavity: The lips become cracked and red, sometimes accompanied by bleeding. A strawberry tongue may appear on the oral mucosa, that is, red bumps appear on the surface of the tongue.

4) Lymph node enlargement and changes in the limbs: The child's cervical lymph nodes will swell unilaterally, usually as painless nodules. Hard edema and skin erythema may occur in the hands and feet, and peeling may occur at the finger (toe) tips in the later stage of the disease.

In order to effectively treat Kawasaki disease, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible for professional diagnosis and treatment. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and high-dose aspirin are commonly used treatments that can significantly reduce the risk of coronary artery disease. Parents need to pay close attention to their children's health and seek medical help immediately if similar symptoms occur to prevent the possible risk of developing cardiovascular complications.
