Is mumps contagious?

Mumps is an infectious disease caused by the mumps virus, which is mainly transmitted through droplets. That is, when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks, the virus will enter the air with the droplets and may be infected after being inhaled by others. The virus can also be transmitted through direct contact with the saliva of an infected person, such as sharing tableware or kissing.

Mumps is highly contagious, especially in the first few days before symptoms appear and in the first few days of illness. Generally speaking, the incubation period from exposure to the virus to the onset of symptoms is about 14 to 21 days. After becoming ill, patients usually experience systemic symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, and fatigue, followed by swelling and pain in the parotid glands, which are also typical characteristics of mumps.

The most effective way to prevent mumps is with the mumps vaccine, which is usually given in combination with the measles and rubella vaccine, or MMR vaccine. Vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of infection and reduce transmission.

If you are unfortunately infected with mumps, you should isolate yourself immediately and avoid close contact with others, especially young children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems. The treatment of mumps is mainly symptomatic, such as resting, drinking plenty of water, and using antipyretics and painkillers to relieve symptoms. Common drugs include ibuprofen tablets and acetaminophen tablets, but you must follow the doctor's advice when taking them.

Mumps is a highly contagious disease. The key to preventing and controlling its spread lies in vaccination and timely isolation. If symptoms occur, seek medical attention as soon as possible and follow the doctor's treatment recommendations.
